FAQ

Bail bond MGA frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions North Carolina surety bail agents ask us most about powers, BUF terms, contracting and switching MGAs.

What is a managing general agency (MGA) for bail bonds?

A bail bond MGA works between surety insurance carriers and the licensed bail agents who write bonds. Bobcat Surety contracts agents, supplies their powers of attorney, manages build-up funds, handles reporting with the carriers and supports agents day to day so they can focus on writing bonds.

Do I need a license to write bail bonds with Bobcat Surety?

Yes. To write surety bail bonds in North Carolina you must hold a surety bail bondsman license from the North Carolina Department of Insurance (NCDOI) and be appointed by an insurer. If you're still getting licensed, apply anyway. We can talk you through the process and get your contracting ready.

How fast will I receive my powers?

Bobcat Surety offers next-day powers. Once you're contracted and in good standing, power orders are processed so you have them the next business day, so you're not turning away bonds while you wait for paper.

What is a build-up fund (BUF)?

A build-up fund is a reserve set aside from each bond you write. It protects the agent and the surety against forfeiture losses. BUF terms, meaning how much is held per bond and how and when it's returned, vary a lot between MGAs and make a real difference to your cash flow.

What are Bobcat Surety's BUF terms?

Our BUF terms are among the most agent-friendly we know of, and they're a big reason agents switch to us. Exact terms depend on your volume and experience. Call us or apply online and we'll walk you through them before you sign anything.

Which insurance carriers do you work with?

Bobcat Surety places agents with multiple established surety carriers. We go over carrier details one-on-one during contracting.

Can I switch to Bobcat Surety from my current MGA?

Yes. Many of our agents came to us from other MGAs. We'll review your situation, including your current agreements and outstanding liability, and lay out a clear plan for moving your business over.

Do you work with new bail agents?

Yes. We work with experienced agents and with newly licensed bondsmen. New agents get hands-on help with the basics: paperwork, power handling, reporting and building relationships at the courthouse.

What parts of North Carolina do you cover?

We contract surety bail agents across North Carolina, from Charlotte and the Triangle to the Triad, the coast and the mountains. Our office is in Charlotte at 101 N McDowell St.

What are your office hours?
